Big Trouble in Little China: CouchMan Lo Pan vs. Jorge Shen

August 30, 2022

"Big Trouble in Little China" is a film of such greatness that Cool Movies Darth brings in two Internet powerhouses to chat about it. Friend of the podcast Andrew Tiede from Baking While Baked returns to represent the Midwest and Jorge from the "Not a Strong Start" podcast represents the West Coast. It is CM Darth's attempt to take the best of two cultures to properly honor The Horror Master John Carpenter and the wild aura of the eighties.

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

This was definitely one of the most fun podcasts that I have recorded. I suppose the trick to make me think that you are serious about being on the podcast is to respond to my pleas on Twitter with a fun GIF. How can I not follow up on one's sincerity when they reply to the suggestion of "Big Trouble in Little China" as a topic with the following:

The only other person who seemed invested in the thread was Andrew Tiede. I have been wanting to get him back on the show since we had our "Bust'n Meatballs at the Caddyshack (The secret "Ghostbusters" episode)" podcast. So after I narrowed out the time with Jorge Marrero to record, the invitation was sent off to @CouchManBakes. No promises were made.

Two time zones to negotiate with, my work schedule constantly being changed, and the monthly goth night at the Rose Bowl hangover were not enough to stop our ode to "Big Trouble in Little China". We had the podcaster/wrestler who claims to have cockblocked Billy Corgan, the comedian who has dedicated his TikTok to culinary criticism while stoned, and the West Coast filmmaker come together to demonstrate Egg Shen's philosophy about China.

Of course the Chinese mix everything up. Look at what they have to work with. There's Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoist alchemy and sorcery. We take what we want and leave the rest. Just like your salad bar.

We definitely go on tangents, but this is the most Eighties movie ever. How can that be avoided? It was not that difficult to avoid getting away from the feature. As long as I had the film on mute in my peripheral, time management was pretty easy. Also, it was only 5:30 pm CDT when we started. How drunk can I possibly get in the 45 minutes I had between leaving work and starting the show? I'm out of Malort.

NinetyForChill: The #Podcast - Ally’s Trash Feature Revue’s Covid Binge

Episode 82: Ally’s Trash Feature Revue’s Covid Binge (And an ode to "Swamp Thing").

Skimble is there for Ally with sympathy snooze

Ally’s Trash Feature Revue’s Covid Binge

August 23, 2022

Cool Movies Darth is on his own this week, so he has chosen to go back to the library provided by Ally of Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy's Trash Feature Revue. If anything, this episode will provide an ideal movie binge for those who have to take the time to recuperate from Covid-19. Sadly, that is what the co-producer of this podcast is going through. Wish Ms. Ally well and tell her to tune to this episode dedicated to nothing but quality films she found for $3.33 at the Champaign, IL Disc Replay.

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

I do not want to put too much pressure on my listeners to step up and be a guest on my podcast. Thus, the call for guests was made for next week's episode after I had thought the previous week's episode was published. Would you not know it, Podbean went and glitched on me for no reason.

That did not effect the people who expressed interest in coming on the show, but I did not need that extra pressure. Especially when looking at my stats, no one seems to come back for part two of a recording. My work schedule has yet to totally straighten itself out, so intense editing does not seem reasonable. It is just nothing but pressure for NinetyForChill: The Podcast. This is not what I signed up for.

I guess I should just appreciate that the shorter episodes, like my trip to the Trash Feature Revue, get good numbers. My ego should be pleased. But the perfectionist in me wants quality over quantity. Fortunately, the art of just bullshitting about movies has reached its groove for me, so I think this episode is fun.

At least I hope it is. When you are trying to get your ex-girlfriend to spread the word with the title, you do not want to let her down. Please do that with social media. Quarantine.

My last trip to the Trash Feature Revue was suppose to include a feature to represent the letter T, but time left me thinking that there was enough content for "Ally Presents: Puppets, Emo Vampires, and Christian Metaphors". I still ended up watching "Thir13een Ghosts", ironically in hopes of giving something for Ally and I to chat about for an episode (probably dedicated to Dark Castle Entertainment's films). At least that episode would have varying quality as the Matthew Lillard movie is the first feature from Dark Castle that I enjoyed.

"Thir13een Ghost" is not art. It is just campy and insane fun that make more sense than "The Reaping" or "Gothika". Finally enjoying a Dark Castle flick shows you how low their bar was set to inevitably hop over.

NinetyForChill: The #Podcast - Russhausen Presents the @C2E2 Experience

 NinetyForChill.com: The #Podcast

Episode 80: Russhausen Presents the @C2E2 Experience ("Star Wars" Panels, MCU Worship, and Nerds Know???).

Danhausen or Cosplayer

Cool Movies Darth has returned home from C2E2 with all of the festivities (that he attended [Sorry Cosplay Ball]) documented for you. Was it better than Fan Expo Chicago? Who did he come to see? Did he do much to promote the NinetyForChill: The #Podcast? Cosplay's premier "Captain N: The Gamemaster" may finally be getting the nerd recognition he deserves. Or is he still pumped from the Danhausen photo op?

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

When you dedicate your spare time to creative efforts (podcasting, blogging, etc.), it can be tough to really...I mean really...enjoy yourself. I do not know if I have three to four day cons in me, but I did enjoy most of the weekend. It is just the little things like a hotel without snacks and Reed Pop having an app that was only intended to get my Facebook information. That is better than Fan Expo charging an extra hundred dollars to enjoy everything, but this is not the Meta nerds appreciate.

Since I was using valet parking, I did not unload all of my podcasting equipment. This lead me to document the first two days with the Podbean app. It works pretty well as long as there are no Apple iOS updates. Perhaps the ease of recording will inspire me to move on in creating a Patreon. What can I do for you that is worth five-dollars a month? Let me know at russthebus07@gmail.com.

The format of this podcast episode might be a little odd. I had released bonus episodes for day one and day two of the convention. These episodes will be available below. Because of this, this episode opens with me discussing day three and concluding the convention. If you listened to the bonus episodes, feel free to skip everything after Crowley's request for "a woo-hoo."

Despite this being an audio format, I do record myself unboxing the first mystery box that I have ever purchased at a convention. This comes after 10 conventions. Was a Nintendo-themed Looksie Box worth $60? It does not take too many "Mega Man" prizes for me to say yes.

Imagine We Still Had VHS: "Martiann Successor Nadesico" Episodes 1-3

*This blog post was started on August 17, 2022.

Convention season is over, so it is back to trying to come up with time to watch movies. And of course, "House of Dragons" is going to debut Sunday, so that may all get thrown to the side. It is bad enough that I am behind on video games to play, but there is still "WestWorld" to return to.

At least my job, staffing wise, is settling in. This means I should not have too many early shifts. Time should be more manageable. Outside of time management, things seem to be going pretty well. I do feel like a conclusion to this physical existence would be nice, but that is more prevalent when I am stoned, trying to fall asleep. Every morning I wake up, so let us continue.

As for continuing my writing, it seems tricky. I say that, and immediately think, "Come up with some fiction". The environment just does not seem right. When I wrote "Main Event of the Dead", there was a better social environment. My script writing started during my relationship with Cindy and carried over to my second stint at Illinois Central College with my best friend Stefanie Smith. Once my relationship with her concluded, no one seemed to give a shit about my efforts. If it was not for my time in hospitality, writing about my Schrodinger-like existence, there would be no practice in writing.

The issue is finding stuff to practice. I do not have the cynical drunks to inspire my satire. Thus, it is up to movies and wrestling. Movies get "NinetyForChill: The #Podcast", so criticism with aspirations of a Pulitzer is lost. As for wrestling, since I concluded "Rip'Em System: Vince McMahon's Mein Kampf", it has been dependent on ranking the performers based around championships. WWE's lazy booking has made constantly writing about that a challenge.

Thankfully, Pluto TV and Tubi have allowed me to go back to what started the development of my writing skills, pre-Toonami anime and anime not flashy enough for Funimation. These streamers spare me from gambling on my VHS tape deck successfully playing my scores of tapes.

Ironically, the series I chose to revisit was the last set of VHS tapes that I devoted to colleting completely, "Martian Successor Nadesico". I will need to revisit "Gundam Wing" to determine if this is my second favorite giant mecha series. At least that means I have the next anime I will need to discuss lined up (This was stated before I saw the series was covered on this blog.).

Or should I watch "Macross Plus" or "Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure". Keep circulating the tapes (and tomorrow will be dedicated to "Rifftrax: The Return of Swamp Thing").

Martian Successor Nadesico: Episodes 1-3

Pinterest @rpgzero
Pinterest @rpgzero

By 2196, humanity has colonized space as far out as Mars. All seems well until an alien force, presumed to be from Jupiter, started to expand the reach of their empire to the inner planets of the solar system. Little is known about the Jovian "lizards" except that their gravity-based weaponry is far superior than anything Earth's United Forces has to offer. It was only a matter of time before the Jovian forces had conquered the Moon and Mars.

Like in the late 20the century, galactic expansion is not a big deal to most humans, so as long as they can fend off the invaders, they just blow off the attacks. Except for Akito Tenkawa, a fry cook who unexplainedly ended up on Earth after the first Jovian attack on Mars. Suffering from PTSD, he cannot hold down a job down and is shunned for having nanotechnology in his body that is necessary to operate any machinery on Mars, but is only used by mech pilots on Earth.

He is seen only as a coward, but his fortunes are about to change after a loose suitcase falls from the trunk of a car and crashes into his bike. The passenger is nice enough to help Akito out, but thinks there is a deeper connection between the two of them. As her car pulls away, Akito finds a picture left behind. This photograph is of him and an obnoxious girl as children. Akito realizes that the girl who he just ran into is Yurika Misumaru. She may have the answers about the demise of his parents the day her and her admiral father left Mars.

Akito follows her to a Nergal Heavy Industries facility, a private military contractor. Screaming Yurika's name the entire way to the base, he is obviously detained. Prospector, the civilian liaison for Nergal, questions Akito and after hearing his story, takes pity on the Martian and offers him a job as a cook on the new space fortress Nadesico. It is not ideal for a traumatized war survivor, but at least it give him a place to belong. And of course the Jovians are quick to attack.

Panics takes over and Akito takes a giant mech, an Aestivalis, to escape. Soon the captain of the Nadesico messages him calling on him to serve as a distraction to allow the ship to launch. Cowardice is not even a thought to the captain because the captain is Yurika. Akito seems to be a natural pilot and is the hero of the day as the Nadesico defeats the Jovians with little effort.

This is the first victory for Earth in the war with the Jovians, but the United Forces are not pleased. Nergal has no intention to provide the ship to the UF because they are not about to defend earth when there are so many humans left behind during the retreats from the colonies and answers to be obtained. The UF cannot afford to let a civilian battleship operate independently and will do whatever they can to stop them from leaving on their mission.

Akito needs answers about his parents and what happen to the Martian colonists, so he will put his culinary aspirations on the back burner to defend the ship. With the support of Yurika and the "Gekiganger III" anime-obsessed pilot Gai Daigoji, his fear will not stop him from defending those he cares about.

I have always thought that giant mech anime was played out as I was getting into anime. Central Park Media's mascot was "MD Geist". "Robotech" and "Voltron" were the first two animes to break big stateside in the 1980s. Anime intrigued me because of the drama and adult themes that it suggested animation was capable of. Not action that can be seen on "Mighty Morphing Power Rangers".

The only reason that I got into "Neon Genesis Evangelion" was because of its reputation as the greatest series ever. That series provides all the drama and symbolism I wanted, so it may have left me hungry for mecha as a means to tell stories. By the time "Evangelion" had concluded (As in, all the VHS tapes made it stateside.), I was ready for a new series.

Being an elitist, "Gundam Wing" on Toonami was not going to be enough. I was a fan of ADV Films ahead of all other American distributors, so I just presumed "Martian Successor Nadesico" was the next "Evangelion". To my joy, this is a more luscious looking series that took the piss out of my favorite franchise and celebrated geekdom that "Excel Saga" was yet to do.

The comedy is always present but drama is never ignored. It is exactly how I like to cope. If you want to focus on taking things seriously, you lose track of the present. Laugh your way through trauma because you need to get to the future.

I can see where many would think that is poor storytelling. If the writers do not take things seriously, why should the audience? My counter is that there is enough overly dramatic bollocks out there. After the intensity of "Evangelion", this is the break mech fans need.

The character design might deter some. It also does not take itself too seriously. This especially apparent with juxtaposing the story to the events occurring in the binge of "Gekigengar III" that Akito is on during his free time between cooking and piloting. I find it to be a clever storytelling device, but others may see it as an affront to a genre that they take way too seriously.

"Dual" maybe the series that better suits them since it has a "Tenchi Muyo!/El Hazard" vibe when it comes to deconstructing giant robot anime, but that is for fans of boy as the center of obsessed girls' universe. This series was a new approach to a tried genre of anime, and it should be admired for that. Add in great themes songs, and I think it is worth a view by any Japanese animation fan.

"Martian Successor Nadesico" is a great entry point for people that want to dabble into anime. It offers fan service, but not excessive to the point where the audiences thinks that it is trying to sell sex. The battles are fun, but not trying to sell the audience on gore. Unless you want Shakespearian drama, the humor does not take anything away from the series.

"Nadesico's" only fault could be that you do know it is still a cartoon. I do not see that as a bad thing, but some nerds want something to transcend a medium. This is a show that is not ashamed of being just entertainment and amusing an audience. Can you blame them for wanting a large one?

NinetyForChill: The #Podcast - You Listen. "They Live"...with Gregory Carl

 NinetyForChill.com: The #Podcast

Episode 79: You Listen. "They Live"...with Gregory Carl (We came here to chew bubble gum and podcast. Thankfully, we were all out of bubble gum.).

Did animals not notice how fleshy and flavorful the aliens looked?

You Listen. ”They Live” with Gregory Carl

August 2, 2022

It only felt fitting to spend SummerSlam Weekend covering a movie starring the greatest heel in professional wrestling history, Roddy Piper. Gregory Carl from "The Mud Show" returns to "NinetyForChill: The #Podcast" to provide all the praise to perhaps the best feature starring a wrestler, "John Carpenter's They Live". This is a film so awesome that Cool Movies Darth suggests that it may have encouraged WWE to go into the movie business and resulted in CM Darth deciding to buy it a third time for all the possible special features that only Shout/Scream Factory can offer.

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

It seems that I will never get the scheduling for my podcast figured out. Because Gregory and I nearly chat about the movie for two hours (We were definitely bullshitting for more than that.), I felt it maybe wise to split the show into two parts. But C2E2 is this weekend, and of course I want to podcast about that convention.

Perhaps putting these episodes two weeks a part is a good idea. In other words, the numbers for my second part of "The Producers" were not what I hoped. If we listened to the first part of the recording, what is really going to change in the second? Well, I cannot promise me exposing all the sultry details of figuring out sex in "They Live" part two, but that is what you got last week.

Gregory and I are two retail employees who love pro-wrestling. This means we have a lot more in common with each other. Hence, these episodes should be more focused on the subject matter.

In part one, we pretty much stick to the film and pro-wrestling chatter. Not to say I did not try to make this more political. When I confirmed that this recording was going to go forward, Michael Dubois was contacted to see if he could jump in. Too bad we were already a half hour in when he saw the DM.

"They Live" is an essential sub 100-minute movie. It is fast-paced with a message, and just provides you with the silly violence that you want from any eighties action movie. Gregory points out that it almost follows all the same notes that only Arnold Schwarzenegger films like "Commando" and "The Terminator" avoid. Our hero, the rowdy one's Nada, just falls into the undeclared war between humans and aliens like John McClain happens to always be in the wrong place at the right time. But if a formula works, why change it?

Episode 77: "The Producers" (1967) - A Guide to Punting Proud Boys (And Michael Dubois's Dream of Holographic Gene Wilder).

Skimble if hysterical, fluffy, and adorable

The Producers 1967 - A Guide to Punting Proud Boys

July 19, 2022

Michael Dubois returns to NinetyForChill: The #Podcast to continue their tribute to the late great Gene Wilder with 1967's "The Producers". It only seems fitting to revisit Mel Brook's motion picture debut in honor of his recent 96th birthday. This feature is Cool Movie Darth's favorite from the auteur, but Michael would have preferred Nathan Lane's presence. What the two do agree on: We need more mocking of the Far Right via cinema.

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

So...I am not waiting till the last minute to get this post completed. What is another lost day off? "Pokémon Legends: Arceus" is in my library. There will be a day when it will finally be played.

To my credit, I have at least figured out how to make these blog posts relatively concise. There is a chance that I will be ably to enjoy the rest of this Sunday. Too bad it has to be cut short since my early shifts always seem to come the day following my scheduled days off.

Sleeping in is something my cats graciously allow me. The result is I responsibly only get 10 hours to fuck around. Do employers consider that some people like to stay up late and do stupid things with their time? Sorry that I have chose not to procreate. Somethings you do not have to out grow.

It is having late nights that allow me to find and truly appreciate classic cinema. This is especially true when you lived with a girl for the better part of four years who did not like Mel Brooks. You would think that Ally from Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy would appreciate all of the musical numbers. Thankfully Michael Dubois does.

If anything, Michael missed the lack of them from Mel Brook's feature debut. He first saw the 2005 adaptation of the Broadway musical adaptation of this 1967 movie which famously had Nathan Lane portray scheming producer Max Bialystock. @GentleThemE on Twitter preferred the friendlier take on this lead role over Zero Mostel's return to Hollywood after the Black Listing from McCarthyism. I think adding context to the importance of this casting may have softened Michael's take. From there, we talk about the feature and my inquiries about whether or not the 2005 remake was comparable in quality.

1967...2005...we are talking about a movie that tells the tale of producing a play guaranteed to fail with songs that glorify Adolph Hitler. Because we are in 2022, it ends up being very easy for us to go on plenty of antifascist tangents. This gives Michael the forum to preach about how mocking them is the key for the Western world to survive.

If you need more backing behind this revelation, check out the videos of Lindsey Ellis on YouTube.

As I was pulling the above video from her channel, it opens with a statement about how people try to use "Mel Brooks did this" as a blanket statement for poor satire. Not what I was hoping for, but it serves as a great transition into other elements of the podcast we discuss. From mocking Proud Boys to trying to understand them and how they misinterpret cinema like "Fight Club" and "American History X". I am surprised that I did not ask about how Edward Norton is somehow the Neo-Nazi ideal.

The two of us ended up talking for over two hours, so this recording will be divided into two parts. I imagine it will get more political. That is what I look forward to when I have Michael as a guest. By the 1:30 mark, I am sure the language will finally get explicit, so next week may not be appropriate for kids. Actually, I can guarantee that.

After FanExpo, I watched "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot". Since the theatrical run was based around a tour showing the feature off, there are no green band trailers. Thus, to do it justice, you have to deal with a lot of cursing.

I guess my final word for part one is that if you do not like the politics on the pod, my next guest wants to talk about "They Live". Gregory Carl Gathmann may focus on Roddy Piper and wrestling chatter, but you cannot avoid the Reagan bashing that comes with John Carpenter's greatest satire.

If you want to end the politicization of my movie podcast, follow the instructions below.

Follow me on Twitter @catbusruss. If you want to be on the show, contact me on Twitter or send an email to russthebus07@gmail.com. All we need is a theme, movie, director, or actor and a focus on sub 100-minute material. As long as the credits start before the 1:39:59 mark on the runtime bar, the movie qualifies.
