Hopefully, my anger at these ridiculous ads by the State of Illinois will lead me to rant on about more thinks that piss me off. It's kind of my thing.

If you live Illinois (or for those depending on Moline for your local television...one of the mockings of Iowa I'd been holding back on), you have probably seen or heard the "Loser DUI" ads. I'm not overly pissed at the TV ads because, I cannot piss on the art of implication, but this sound bite from the radio ad makes me want to scream for the ACLU to do something about it..

"If you get a DUI, you might as well have a big tattoo of the word loser on your forehead...We can't hire that loser.".

If you read an application for employment from most businesses, it will ask if you have ever been convicted of anything besides minor traffic offenses. It will also say, this will not prevent you from being hired. The truth is, IF YOU ARE ARRESTED FOR A FELONY BEFORE YOU ARE HIRED (INCLUDING SOME MISDERMEANORS), YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE INELLIGIBLE FOR EMPLOYMENT. Yes, this truth may only apply to Tri Star Marketing of Champaign, Illinois (the owners of the Super Pantry franchise), but in the current economy, who can blame them?.

Stupid, misleading, unfair, but hey, that's the private sector. The beauty of America is anyone is free to act how they want to act. Why you would want to be an asshole is beyond me, but god bless those who are rolling over in their grave in the name of freedom for that right.

What I do know is the government should not be telling the private sector how to be misleading, unfair, and messed up. These are things we can all figure out on our own.

These ads tell the listener to shun people who have made a fairly common mistake. The government is already punishing the drunks who mess up, it isn't the business of the private sector to punish anyone outside of their doors. Why the Illinois Department of Transportation wants to hold a grudge, I do not know?

I guess a White Sox fan must be the head of IDOT. He must think drunk drivers are like Cubs fans, and he's gotta spin it in someway to make sure he can say he's better than them.

Russ, I agree. Thought the same thing when I heard the ad. Being in employment/human resources, while companies can restrict who they hire, they can't withdraw employment for someone who accepts a job and has a misdemeanor DUI on their record for a position that does not involve driving. Now if driving is a part of the job, they can as long as they say that up front that passing a driving background check is a condition of employment. The ad is not clear on this and is somewhat misleading.
