Ghost World, Ebertfest, & ThePoeticCritic’s Summertime Sadness

April 26, 2022

Cool Movie Darth has finally attended Ebertfest when he saw the Terry Zwigoff and Thora Birch hosted screening of "Ghost World". It may have only been to one of the 13 shows, but this is a movie that has an important place in his life, regardless of the extra 20 minutes. He does his best to describe the experience to his big sister, ThePoeticCritic, perhaps to distract her from the remaining month of cinema lacking Jeff Goldblum.

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

If only there was not a bitter, former coworker from Marine Bank who decided to report my blog to frustrated management, I could probably have afforded the $200 admission fee to attend all the films at Ebertfest. I mean Seymour and Enid may have only had their lives ruined due to incidental circumstances. This is the "libertarian" who watched Telegram videos next to me and stated how she thought Bernie Sanders was a fascist and J.K. Rowling knows what she is talking about.

She had found a new job, closer to her home with comparable pay, but to be truly happy, she went out of her way to try and ruin my life. For her sake, IDES better side with me on my appeal of Marine Bank's protest because the world need to be warned of her. If you have suggestions on how to provide her with a scarlet letter, let me know.

So I may have been in the right mood to see the cinematic adaptation of Daniel Clowes's seminal comic book. If you feel like the rest of the world does not care about how awful they can look, this feature is for you. It lets you know, you are not the only one out there. The dilemma is, should we grow out of this?

When I was introduced to this film in 2004 by my now estranged best friend, both of us may have ignored the question. Or, we just wanted to know why we had to change to fit in instead of the dim ones. It is a story about growing up, and whether or not if it is worth it.

I had intended to at least stick around Champaign/Urbana on Saturday to catch Guillermo del Toro's presentation of the black and white version of his "Nightmare Alley" remake, but my dad offered me a ticket to the Peoria Rivermen's Southern Professional Hockey League's semi-final series conclusion. This ended up being a more expensive endeavor. How was I suppose to know that they would be selling limited edition "Star Wars" hockey sweaters?

Imagine We Still Had VHS: Speed Grapher: Volume Two

*This blog post was started on April 20, 2022.

I have a lot of things on my plate, but there is a sense of relief after getting past my latest unemployment hearing. Money was a stressing factor, but everything seems to be in order. Hopefully, the wise judge (He understood that whatever I was writing was satirical) will rule in my favor, and to Marine Bank's credit, there was only one lie on their side (My branch never had monthly one-on-one coaching.).

It was acknowledged that they (or at least the branch manager) knew I was writing my blog at work, so that may clear me over two counts of misconduct. I brought up my case that they fired me because I stated my opinion when it was requested in the annual review. The best revelation that came from this was that the actual inciting incident which led to my unwarranted termination was revealed. So, revenge is the new thought consuming my mind.

Am I going to be a better person than the person who wanted my job? We will wait until I get the ruling.

Otherwise, Ebertfest costing $200 is not cool. It is fair if you are going to every movie, but Marine Bank has made it so that I do not get the luxury. $20 a ticket is fair for a 35 mm movie showing, but my $90 fee for 4-days of Wizard World in 2019 included the chance to see Fred Durst's film "The Fan" (starring John Travolta and Devon Sawa). After the "Gothika" DVD included the music video for Limp Bizkit's "Behind Blues Eyes" as a special feature, Durst's cinematic involvement must be stopped.

The six hundred dollars I am fighting for would make life easier, be it my medical bills or car insurance, but it turns out that my debt will not be that bad. If I can somehow get my podcast, "NinetyForChill.com: The #Podcast" sponsored, all would be right with the world. If anyone has any suggestions on how my podcast can earn me $100 a week, let me know with an email to russthebus07@gmail.com.

If there is any frustration right now when it comes to my podcast, it is that I have no time for a guest this week, nor the time to binge a bunch of movies from "Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy's Trash Feature Revue". Here is to hoping that I will meet someone at "Ghost World" who will want to chat. Anyone know where I can a press pass?

It makes me wonder, does NinetyForChill.com make me a journalist? I am making as much money as one. After revisiting "Speed Grapher", I know photos are not going make that extra money. But, this anime series does suggest that there is a lot of trouble that can be had, provided you are rescuing an abused heiress. Gods know that I thrive with trouble.

Speed Grapher: Episodes 5 - 8

*This blog post was resumed on April 21, 2022.

I will be up front, haste seems to be dominating my life. There is a need for immediate answers to problems that may be able to wait. My intent was to review the first four episodes, but life got in the way for the podcast, thus, my immediate memory of the finer details was lost. Returning to them seemed redundant, thus I chose to move forward.

Even now, I want my mind to be clear when I review this series. AEW Dynamite will wait, but since Fite.TV decided to disable VPNs to watch it commercial fee, my life is running behind. Things will not be order till I watch it, so pardon me if the series does not receive the respect, but more importantly the understanding that is so desperately deserves.

And that attitude proves I did some research to know that this Gonzo title is not as beloved as "Welcome to the NHK" or "Hellsing". To that end, shame on the so called anime fans.

After defeating the rubber Euphoric assassin/ballet dancer, heiress Kaguya Tennozu and Euphoric photographer Tatsumi Saiga are on the run. It is a greater challenge that Saiga anticipated since Kaguya has never gotten to experience the little things in her life. She is confused by about everything be it the deliciousness a cup of instant ramen or how to behave on a subway. This is all due to her mother Shinsen and her right hand man, Mr. Suitengu, resorting to keeping her locked away in the corporate tower.

Shinsen hates the beauty that her daughter has become while Suitengu seems sympathetic toward Kaguya's plight despite his exceptionally cold demeanor. But that does not excuse him for using his goddess to amuse the hedonists at the Roppongi Club. All of the key politicians, businessmen, and celebrities of Japan seem to belong to this club despite the immense membership fees. Failure to meet the clubs demands results in forfeiture of all assets usually via death by "suicide" to fulfill a the life insurance policy that accompanies club membership.

Some lucky few can serve the club and avoid the debt. They are the Euphorics, those blessed by the Goddess's kiss to unlock the true potential of their passion. Their services are needed to recapture Kaguya because fate seemed to allow Saiga that blessing. Now, whenever Saiga takes a picture with any camera, the focus of the shot will explode providing him the power to capture the life in the frame.

Saiga's neighbor Bob has arranged it so the two can hide at a drag bar ran by his "sister" David. As for Suitengu's cronies, they are escorting Madame Kaganei to face off with him. She is a Euphoric whose obsession and need for diamonds has allowed her to turn her body into the hardest substance in the natural world while being translucent. But, she has significant debt to the club, so she might have her own reasons to take Kaguya as her own hostage. Of course if she fails with either plan, Suitengu has a teeth-polishing obsessed Euphoric on standby.

"Speed Grapher" has been a divisive series. My best friend who has definitely lived through some wild and traumatic times enjoyed the envelopes that the story pushed while Ally of Ally's Accessories Shop found it to be too disturbing. Perhaps as schizophrenic or as a sheltered, god-fearing Midwestern woman, the concept of a conspiracy to sexualize and abuse a teenage girl while claiming it to be the victim's own imagination is everything she ever feared.

Some critics think that the themes are solely for shock. I feel that by the end of the series, it all pays off in a socialist's dream with some jabs at George W. Usually, three episodes is the most that I like to watch when I ask to "Imagine this was on VHS", but I am amused how the episodes tend to play out like "Highlander: The Series". Lets give our protagonist an hour to defeat the latest gimmicked bad guy and move on. "Speed Grapher" is an improvement on this formula because it has an overarching plot.

A lot of anime series start out like this, but then tend to fall into filler episodes until the director realizes that he has to work towards a conclusion. This is not as epic as "Evangelion", but I cannot recall this series ever falling into just having fan service episodes. By Volume 3, most of the shock efforts are subdued and it is just about Saiga and Kaguya's efforts to be happy in a world where money determines everything.

When bringing up "Evangelion", I will acknowledge the animation is not up to that standard. The style is far more unique than most series, but it does not look as sharp and vivid as "Hellsing" or many series from the early noughties. It depends on how you like your anime when it comes to the style. Do you want it to feel more like a manga or loud like "Dragon Ball Z"? My preference is towards the prior, especially when the narrative has a noir vibe.

"Speed Grapher" is definitely a grown up anime, so I can see the lack and care for universal appeal can turn off your casual fans of the genre. It is a narrative that wants to push the envelope by attacking your fears and urges, not just rely on nudity and violence. The dark art and casual animation fits the story perfectly.

This is a series for those who want an independent film vibe. As an aspiring, traumatized artist, "Speed Grapher" is perfect entertainment. Here's hoping you are living the naive peaceful life instead.

NinetyForChill: The #Podcast - Ally Presents: Gothika, Juno, Invitations to a Suicide...

NinetyForChill.com: The #Podcast

Episode 64: Ally Presents: Gothika, Juno, Invitations to a Suicide... (plus Hawk's Vengeance & King of California).

Ally Presented, Eva Approved

Ally Presents: Gothika, Juno, Invitation to a Suicide…

April 19, 2022

Well, life happens, and this week's scheduled interview fell through. Fortunately, Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy has provided Cool Movies Darth with plenty of films and inspiration. This week, "NinetyForChill.com: The #Podcast" catches up with five of those features: "Gothika", "Hawk's Vengeance", "Invitation to a Suicide", "Juno", and "King of California".

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

It has kind of been a tough end to the week, and that was before I watched "Gothika". How can you end a ghost story with Fred Durst pissing on the memories of Keith Moon and John Entwistle? How the hell is that music video considered a bonus feature for that DVD? I have to say, I am second guessing my $1 purchase of "Die Another Day". If Mom and Dad can pick and choose the Bond movies they see, why cannot I?

As I stated, the binge was due to my guest having a family issue requiring him to cancel our scheduled interview. Oh how I envy people who have lives that demand sacrifice. It is tough to sell people that I will need the whole of the bereavement time if Eva or Skim passes.

Pinterest @andymovieman

Hopefully, Tim Loss and I will be able to address "Kayfabe", a film about Western Canadian, low-level indie wrestling. The only downside is that I will need to rewatch it for a second time. It was way to accurate when it came to portraying the under trained and phony heroes that Downstate Illinois wrestling is based around. This feature serves as a great cautionary tale about what to do and not do when it comes to promoting wrestling.

Before the cancellation, I was inspired to unknowingly revisit a Gary Daniels movie from the mid-90's. A Canadian action movie seemed like a great film to attach to the wrestling podcast, so "Hawk's Vengeance" was going to be featured this week anyhow.

With that said, this maybe the most coverage that feature has received in 25 years. The only trailer I could find for the film is in French. Pardon me for not scrolling forever on Pinterest for a poster.

It ended up being quite the challenge to find cool media for my "Letter I" feature, "Invitation to a Suicide". This feature is about a young, less buff Pablo Schrieber ("Den of Thieves") who, to pay off a debt to a Russian mobster, decides to be the star of his own snuff film. The film says on the box "A Dark Comedy", but for someone who is passive suicidal, its impact was far greater than I expected. I was almost inspired in the wrong ways, but oh the laughs that could be had.

Cool Movies Darth addresses Sony's most important feature of Winter 2021, "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City". You may dispute this claim, but "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was really a Disney movie. Reimagining narrative video games and creating an action-packed, minimal scare versions of Universal Picture's horror icons has been Sony's bread and butter since 2002. After 20 years of this, it is time to start repainting their established IP.

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

From what I had gathered from YouTube channels, the general consensus is that this feature was a disappointment. Many "critics"/video game fans felt that most of the actors were miscast, primarily for not looking enough like the video game's characters. There were also complaints about how the feature decided to shove the first three video games into one feature. Then you have Leon S. Kennedy serving as comic relief which seemed blasphemous to the video game fans.

The first issue, I guess I can see, but we recently had Mark Walberg and Tom Holland portraying the leads of "Uncharted". As for shoving three games into one film, two of the games take place at the same time (2 and 3). As for Resi 1, is a haunted house movie going to impress anyone?

Leon being a klutz might insult fans of "Resident Evil 4", but some character in this film needs a hero's journey arc. Every other character being a bad ass works for a video game with little exposition, but everyone being the same in a film can be dull. If you do not have unique gimmicks for each character (Like "Street Fighter"), why would we care about any character's fate.

In the end, I am hoping for a sequel. This flick is competent enough and a nice change from the in your face 3D action that Paul W.S. Anderson's "Resident Evil" series overly relied on. "Welcome to Raccoon City" is a faithful game adaptation. How often do we get that?

Time has seemingly been hard to manage for me recently. As of this post, I have yet to watch a movie this month. I really wanted to return to Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy's Trash Feature Revue with "Gothika", but living constantly exhausted is something I got to quit? Anyhow, there seems to be a loyal fanbase for the Halle Berry feature. Want to chat about it? Send an email to russthebus07@gmail.com.

Pick Your Smith's Song and the Current Disgruntled's Undisputed Champions

*This blog post was started on April 6, 2022.

I think I am to the point that to determine that it was not the Grassroots "Devil Pupils" strain from NuEra East Peoria that has triggered my recent plunge into depression. Something just flipped Monday night as I was high and watching "Robot Chicken" to close my night. Suddenly I thought I was just bound for financial ruin which escalated to me questioning, "for what?"

If I cannot eat 10 boneless wings from Wing Stop (an Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy tradition) before calling it a Tuesday night because nothing seemed worth it, you know my head is fucked up. The day prior I finally received correspondence (three month late) from IDES in regards to my appeal of their decision that Marine Bank was not responsible for unemployment benefits when they fired me for writing about my life as a banker with no specific details about my them or their customers. There is to be an interview, probably between both parties, and I am just fighting for $606 that their bitterness is withholding from me.

I have a better job that takes their employees extenuating circumstances into consideration, pays better, and keeps the staff busy enough that being allowed (which Marine Bank management during downtime) to blog is not even an issue. But, Marine Bank took my savings because I told them how I thought their managers could do better for its employees. They are an overly sensitive management team in Champaign, and that is how we got here.

If you want to find out where I work, you need to listen to older episodes of "NinetyForChill.com: The #Podcast". Like the blogs of MainEventOfTheDead.com, there are no indications of which episodes that I talk about this employer from any of the episode titles. Feel free to explore.

I bring up this drama that I thought may have triggered my downward spiral. Thinking about money made me think about coming up short. It has not happened, but I down an extra $100 each week since I do not have the means of making that with only one job. This leads me to ponder what is the point.

My podcast is not making me money. On top of that, finding guest is problematic and actually leaves me being jealous. Why is it that life never happens to me? No one has the time for the show while I always do. It almost seems like it would be nice to be able to leave my friends hanging because I have to.

At least my 2007 bankruptcy was over a woman who claimed to be Stacia Hardin's best friend's heroin addiction. It does not sound like she is clean, but she has at least got to start a family from me keeping her comfortable till she got knocked up. If I am a financial mess now, that just means a failure.

This makes me ponder how many of the scores of people directed to consume my Twitter (@catbusruss) notifications over my statement that semiautomatic firearms should be outlawed have taken the time to read my blogs or listen to my podcasts. They like trying to mock my photos or spread them to encourage me harm. I have only responded to two of these asshole just because they wanted to call my martial skills fake. It just means I got to be careful. I do not want them think they pushed me to self harm.

My dreams of Stacia are driving me crazy enough. Thankfully Eva and Skimble are looking after me, but what if Eva goes?

I meant to start this blog last night, but instead wallowed in my melancholy. It may have just been a good thing that I am typically exhausted on Tuesday's because of releasing my podcast late Monday night and trying to make something out of my weekend. Of course, the weekends just seem to be self indulgent, so again, what is the point? Especially after this evening's pleas for help were ignored.

Fortunately, I hate having AEW spoiled, so I had to watch tonight. Thanks Christian Cage and Adam Cole (Bay Bay!) for putting on an exciting match to get me back to the keyboard. The problem now is that I will not be in bed before 1 a.m., but I think my last tweet sums everything up. To put briefly, you just take whatever win you can get.

Not even halfway through #AEWDynamite and I got to thank @TonyKhan and company for a great show that has gotten me back on my feet during the worst depression funks I've been in recently. Pardon the hyperbole, but thanks for letting me claim to beat a Funk.

Sorry Terry and Dory Jr.

The Current Disgruntled's Real Wrestling Champions (April 6, 2022)

The 97th Disgruntled's Real World Men's Champion:
AEW World Champion: Hangman Adam Page
(This reign began November, 13, 2021)
  • Page is currently the number one ranked wrestler per Disgruntled Real Championship Wrestling.
  • The wrestler that some may claim to be this champion is IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada.
The 49th Disgruntled's Real Women's Champion:
AEW Women's World Champion: Thunder Rosa
(This reign began March 16, 2022)
  • Rosa will be more than likely be declared DRCW's number one ranked wrestler.
  • The wrestler that some may claim to be this champion is Raw Women's Champion Bianca Belair.
The 151st Disgruntled's Real Tag Team Champions:
SmackDown Tag Team Champions: The Bloodline: Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso (Their second reign began January 5, 2022)
  • The Usos are current the number one ranked wrestler per DRCW.
  • The wrestlers that some may claim to be these champions are AAW and ROH Champions: FTR: Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler.
The OCHO: DRCW's 158th Real Secondary Champion:
TNT Champion: Scorpio Sky (The reign began on March 9, 2022)
  • Scorpio Sky has been undefeated in singles competition for over one year.
  • The wrestler that some may claim to be the champion is IWGP United States Champion SANADA.
The 160th Unified DRCW Gnarly Men's Doubles World Champion:
AEW World Tag Team Champions: Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus
(The reign began on January 10, 2022)
  • I know Jurassic Express has been a solid tag team since the inception of AEW and were a team prior to that, but Jungle Jack Perry has been set up to excel as a singles competitor when their title reign ends.
  • The wrestlers that some may claim to be the champions are Raw Tag Team Champions: Rated RK-Bro: Matt Riddle and Randy Orton.
The 48th DRCW Modern Poser Champion:
WWE Universal Champion Roman Reign
(His second reign started on August 30, 2020).
  • Until the WWE World Championship and WWE Universal Championship are merged into one title belt, I will not claim Reigns as the holder of a potential Real World Championship.
  • If he loses the Universal Championship before the World Championship, the Poser Championship will be rewarded to a different wrestler.
Thursday might be the shits, but Friday is looking good. Who cannot be excited for an AEW Rampage centered around The Black Pool Combat Club? It is a stupid question. I had a guy want to call me racist for thinking Becky Lynch was the top women's talent in WWE, so too many are still snorting the WWE drug.

Thanks Cody.

NinetyForChill: The #Podcast - ”Blind Fury” with Gregory Carl

NinetyForChill.com: The #Podcast

Episode 62: "Blind Fury" with Gregory Carl (Blind Swordsman vs. A Texan with a Shotgun).

Skimble's Fluffy Fury

”Blind Fury” with Gregory Carl

April 4, 2022

Gregory Carl returns to NinetyForChill.com: The #Podcast to critique the movie that established the equation of Rutger Hauer + Action Gimmick = Low Brow Gold. 1989's "Blind Fury" was an early 90s' basic cable Cubs/Braves rain delay stand by. A blind sword-swinging Hauer vs. Randle "Tex" Cobb screams entertainment. Why would you want to see the Cubs be the Cubs when the game resumed?

Cool Movies Darth is a little more knowledgeable when it comes to the late great Dutch actor than his podcast's guest, so it maybe safe to presume that most casual American movie fans hold an underappreciation of this performer. That is not surprising since he might deliver the best accent work in all of cinema. Gregory did not think that Hauer was not an American for even a second.

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

In our discussion, Gregory and I determine if anyone predicted the impact of Hauer on Hollywood, it was our moms. Perhaps not Gregory's, but his significant other remembers watching this feature on WGN as a child. My mom loved him "Ladyhawke" (where she claims to have predicted Michelle Pfeiffer rise to fame [as she preferred "Grease 2"]) and more than likely considers "Nighthawks" to be a Christmas movie.

Hauer was such a reliable actor that you might not even notice him in all the great movies that he starred in. "Batman Begins", "Surviving the Game", and of course "Blade Runner" are some of his finest performances, but they are all in supporting roles. He did portray the leads in Sam Peckinpah's "The Osterman Weekend" and Paul Verhoeven's "Flesh+Blood", but they are pretty subtle performances. As an American version of "Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman", it is nice to see him thrive in over-the-top circumstances.

I will say that this film is not as over-the-top and even as good as 2011's "Hobo with a Shotgun", but that feature was more of a tribute to the legend and range of Hauer. That might make for a fun podcast. Any takers? Send an email to russthebus07@gmail.com.
